we made an awareness video about mangroves as a group project

in this project i took role of most of the environment character design colour variations for scenes in the animation

DRAFT 1

A single, small mangrove pops up the centre screen. Happy Groovie waves.

Narrator

This is Groovy/Groovie, one of the 35 mangrove species native to Singapore.

Two older and taller Groovie pops up on both sides of Groovie, tree cuddles

Groovie lives with their family in the swamps along the coastal shorelines. They’re natural

protectors of the land, preventing soil erosion and acting as air filters.

The camera zooms out to include another local tree sucking/eating a small bubble of C02,

Groovie smiles and sucks up a way larger bubble of C02.

Narrator

Groovie also provides a home to his numerous friends both local and overseas, such as the

giant mudskippers, crabs and birds.

Animals resting around Groovie’s roots, merrymaking and content.

Cuts to close up of Groovie lifting their branch up, listening to adventures told to them by

their feathery friend, Piper the Common Sandpiper, one of their migratory birds nesting on

their hand/branch.

CU of Groovie, asleep. Colours get less saturated and duller.

Narrator

But, alas, not everyone has Groovie’s best interest at heart. Groovie found themselves

sharing the space not just with their animal friends, but with humans. Some who forgot or

didn’t care about the existence of the mangrove.

Groovie wakes up, the camera zooms out slowly. They look around to find their parents

gone, the community shrinking; silhouettes of mangroves in the background fading away as

Groovie gets more upset.

Narrator

Groovie saw less of their friends, even Piper stopped their yearly visitation. They found

themselves in an increasingly unrecognizable and hostile environment, alone.

The camera zooms out to highlight how small and alone Groovie is as factories and

residences populate rapidly in the background. The pollution/smog turns every grey. Bubbles

of C02 suffocate Groovie as they try to eat all the C02 emissions but get too full and sick,

unable to do so on their own.

Roots get clogged up with rubbish and industrial waste

Soil Erosion, Groovey trying to cling onto the soil with roots, doing their best when everything

is being washed away by the rising water.

Narrator

There’s only so much one mangrove can do.

Remembering their parents telling them how they have an important job. Groovey in tears,

severely exhausted and sick. Still holding onto soil but panting.

Fades to black.

A human child’s hand reaches out to hold Groovie’s branch. Colours start spiralling out from

the touch.

Narrator

But hope prevails.

Revealed to be a student with a JGIS volunteer

Groovie looks around to see mangrove saplings planted by students and JGIS volunteers.

Each year Groovie greets their new friends from JGIS. Groovie is now as old as their parents

were, but are surrounded by an increasing number of young mangroves and saplings.

Narrator

Be part of the JGIS Roots and Shoots program. The time for action is now. (To edit needs

**Roots and Shoots; Plant for Hope where students and volunteers from the different R&S

groups come together to plant trees with Dr Goodall.

Roots & Shoots planted 90 saplings in a reforestation plot.

** Mangroves store about 11 per cent of the carbon in all of Singapore's forests but cover

less than six per cent of the forest area
